Team 8 is a Naruto fan fiction by Matthew Schocke, depicting an alternate universe in which Kurenai Yuuhi requests that Naruto Uzumaki be assigned to her team, rather than Kakashi Hatake's. In return, Kiba Inuzuka is assigned to Team 7 with Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchiha. The "official" divergence point of this fic from the canon storyline has not been revealed, though the author has claimed that there are hints scattered throughout, and that a beta reader was able to correctly guess after reading only the first five chapters. It is known to have occurred at some point before Naruto's birth. One key difference occurs several years before the story's beginning, when Kurenai's genin teammates were killed; this affected her strongly, eventually resulting in her examining the academy graduates more closely and seeing Naruto's potential.
The primary focus of the story is on how changes in events and the people he interacts with affect Naruto personally, in particular his developing relationship with Hinata Hyuuga, with whom he is often shipped. His strength and abilities develop at a much quicker rate than in canon as well, to the point that by the Chuunin exams, he is strong enough to defeat Sasuke with a single blow. He is also more thoughtful than in canon, largely as a result of Kurenai's personal influence. Other subplots include hints of a conspiracy hostile to Naruto among the Konoha villagers and the question of why Kurenai's team was slaughtered.
