    • Bernard and Zig Zag are killed during Carlos' death. After Carlos dies, the Guardians escape from the plane, except Zig Zag and Bernard, who crash the plane and it is destroyed. The Guardians mourn the loss of them, but suddenly, Zig Zag gets out of the passengers' window of the plane, stops them, and tells them that he is here. Characters[]

Carlos E. Carlos / Maximus Peabody[]

The ruler of Systar City and Bernard's boss (turned first arch-nemesis) who has an evil plan to destroy Brendam.

Henry Smek[]

Carlos' partner in-crime.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite being a comic relief antagonist, his defeat is intentionally poignant.
  • Anti-Villain: He was at first Bernard's butler, but he turns out to be a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing that teams up with Carlos to kill Bernard. During his battle with the Guardians, Bernard gets the ultimate revenge on him by simply (and sincerely) saying, "I love you" before Toto defeats him by sending him to another dimension.
  • Back for the Finale: He briefly appears during the climax of Collision Course.
  • Big Bad: Some fans think he is the film's main antagonist, despite being the film's comic relief character and having less screen time than Carlos. But he is Carlos' right-hand man.
  • Big-Bad Ensemble: With Carlos.
  • The Brute: He's scrawny, but he's tougher than he looks.
  • Buffy Speak: Throughout the ambush, he calls Olivia a "brown haired skinless rat", Toto a "funny clown without make up", and Joe a "nerdy mole rat".
  • Butt-Monkey: Cowardly, neurotic, and high-strung, he gets threatened by Carlos.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He makes lots of sarcastic remarks as most of his dialogue throughout the film.

  • Disney Villain Death: He gets sent through a portal and was dead at the first part of the film's climax.
  • The Dragon: To Carlos.
  • Drunk with Power: After the exile of Bernard, he himself lampshades, as going mad without power is boring.
  • Freudian Excuse: He gets scolded, strangled, and injured by Carlos throughout the film, making him dislike him.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: The reason behind everything he does for Carlos.
  • Irony: He spends the whole second half of the movie trying to succeed in something to get Carlos' affection... and he gets it only as he's defeated after sacrificing himself to kill the Guardians.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain!: At the first part of the film's climax, he ambushes the Guardians at Systar City and fights them. During the brawl, Bernard yells at Smek not to kill him and tells him that he loves him. But he is defeated by Toto, which makes Carlos proud of Smek for sacrificing himself to kill the Guardians.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He does all of the slapstick and laughs throughout the movie, despite being a villain.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: After his defeat at the end of the second act, Smek remains absent throughout the third and final half of the movie, which gets darker, more dramatic, and more serious than the first two acts of the movie until after Carlos' death.
  • Speech Impediment: He has a stutter.
  • Tragic Villain: After the Guardians' battle with Smek, Carlos thinks Smek (despite being a comic relief character in the film) sacrificed himself to save Systar City and defeat the Guardians.
  • What Could Have Been: In Collision Course, he was going to have a subplot where he seeks revenge on Bernard for banishing him, but he has a brief appearance in a hammock in The Jolly Brothers' hometown (though the commentary thinks that it's his new home since he got banished), where Toto and Joe pass him to find the Jollies.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never get to find out where he is after he is teleported to another dimension by Toto during his failed ambush, which kick starts the film's climax. The DVD Commentary states that Toto killed Smek by erasing him from existence.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Yes, he tried to kill the Guardians. But he only did it because he sacrificed his life to kill them.

  • Ax-Crazy: Quite the violent and unhinged type.
  • Badass Biker: He's shown riding a motorcycle on his pursuit for Bernard.
  • Badass Mustache: He has one in the film, until Bernard runs up with a vacuum cleaner, and vacuums it clean off his face at the climax. At the end of the film, he has a big adhesive bandage conspicuously parked where his mustache used to be.

  • Final Boss: At the end of the film, he's the final obstacle standing in the heroes' way in the film.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has an easy-to-miss scar on the side of his cheek.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Before the film's climax, he sets up a death trap to capture Bernard and take him to Carlos, using a conveyer belt, a boxing glove to punch him in the brain, a rope to tie him up, a vacuum cleaner to suck up his shirt, and a catapult to fling him to the bell tower, whose bell rings so loud, it signals lots of knives to cut him into a million pieces. However, at the end of their battle, he is the victim to his own trap, which doesn't kill him, but humiliates him instead, with the boxing glove punching one of his teeth out, the rope tying his feet up, the vacuum sucking his mustache up, the catapult flinging him to the catapult, and the bell crushing him.
  • Humiliation Conga: By the end of his fight with Bernard and Bruce right before the climax, he gets humilitated by his trap which is set up by Bernard, where he is beaten up in the head a few times by a giant boxing glove to knock one of his teeth out, his feet are tied up by a rope, his mustache is vacuumed by a vacuum, he is thrown to the bell tower by a catapult, and is crushed by a giant bell.
  • Large Ham: He has a loud voice in the film.
  • Leitmotif: Whenever he appears in the film, "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who plays.
  • No Indoor Voice: He has a very loud voice as he speaks all of his dialogue in the film.
  • Professional Killer: He is an assassin to Carlos E. Carlos. He hires him to bring back Bernard and kill the Guardians.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Despite being not a funny character (although he is a Large Ham), he remains absent from the dramatic final battle after being humilited by Bernard and Bruce. He returns after the final battle is over and decides to kill the Guardians once and for all.
  • Third-Person Person: He has a habit of referring himself in this typical speech pattern.
  • Trauma Conga Line: During his final fight with Bernard, he gets tricked into this, getting punched by a boxing glove, getting his feet tied up, getting his mustache vacuumed, being flunked by a catapult, being crushed by a giant bell, and finally, at the end, getting hit on the head by a giant boulder being thrown by Lovelace to save their lives.

Tear Jerker[]

  • The film's Darkest Hour in which Bernard fails to kill Carlos, gives up on finding his courage, and decides to return to Systar City, leaving the Guardians behind.
  • Bernard and Zig Zag's Disney Death after Carlos dies.
  • Given Craig T. Nelson passed away only a couple months before the film's release, this becomes a very touching tribute to him. Especially the closing line.
    Bernard: Thank you, Ben.
